SOCIAL STUDIES

Social studies is the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote effective citizenry. Within the K-12 program, social studies provide coordinated, systematic study drawing upon such disciplines as economics, history, geography, anthropology, archaeology, law, philosophy, political science, religion, and sociology, as well as appropriate content from the humanities, mathematics, and the natural sciences.

Grant opportunities on behalf of Character and Social Studies Education 
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Social Studies team is releasing various upcoming professional development opportunities developed in conjunction with the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards.  
The Preserve America History Teacher of the Year award, co-sponsored by The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, Preserve America, and HISTORY™, honors one exceptional K-12 teacher of American history from each of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense schools and U.S. Territories. The award for 2011 is open to a full-time elementary school teacher of grades K-6 who teaches social studies where there is a major focus on American history (including state and local history).
